Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, LMFT #132252

Matthew Z. Bethell, MA, AMFT

Matthew Bethell is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with a deep commitment to helping individuals navigate challenges such as depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship conflicts, and Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). His approach to therapy is rooted in a profound curiosity about the human condition, inspired by the existential insights of thinkers like Viktor Frankl and Rollo May. Matthew believes that understanding our relationship with anxiety, meaning, and responsibility is key to finding courage in the face of despair. He integrates the wisdom from the existential tradition with a functional contextual approach inspired by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help clients build relational health and psychological flexibility.

Matthew's therapeutic work centers on guiding individuals through psychological pain and uncertainty, emphasizing the importance of purpose in overcoming emotional struggles. He supports clients in changing their relationship with thoughts and feelings, enabling them to lead more present, fulfilling lives. Along with a well-rounded and compassionate perspective to his sessions, a key aspect to therapy with Matthew is the help clients get in living congruently within their values.

Prior to his work in Marriage and Family Therapy, he worked with a neurodiverse population as an Applied Behavioral Analyst. In addition to counseling, Matthew has taught as an adjunct instructor at Fresno Pacific University, and California State University, Fresno.

Matthew's Blog Articles

I make a practice of remembering that even one interaction can create impressions that last a lifetime. It can be a daunting reality to consider, yet I do not want to lose touch with it, because gives each moment infinite value and possibility. Keeping this in mind for therapy sessions is one way to honor my clients’ experience and create a foundation that is conducive for growth.
