FAQs

What should I expect in my first session?

If you choose to visit our office for in-person sessions, our office staff will be available to greet you and help you with any necessary paperwork when you arrive. Your therapist will come into the waiting room to greet you when it is time for your session and will then escort you to their office.

If you would like to see your therapist online, our office staff will facilitate the paperwork collection and scheduling by email or phone. You will be provided with a link to join your therapist via HIPAA-compliant video chat at the time of your session.

During your first session, your therapist will talk to you about what led you to pursue therapy at this time. They will also want to know what you are hoping to gain from your therapy experience. Your therapist will explain the therapy process and give you an opportunity to ask questions.

Should you decide that you would like to continue with this therapist, arrangements for your next session will be made. This will be your decision and there will be no pressure for you to do so.

What do I have to do in sessions?

Because each person has different issues and goals for therapy, therapy will be different depending on the individual. Our therapists tailor their therapeutic approach to your specific needs. In general, you can expect to discuss the current events happening in your life, your personal history relevant to your issue, and report progress from the previous session.

How long will it take to feel better?

Depending on your needs, therapy can be short-term, for a specific issue, or longer-term, to deal with long-standing patterns or maintain personal development. Either way, it is common to schedule regular weekly sessions initially, and then space them out as you see progress.

My partner and I are having problems. Should we pursue individual or couples therapy?

If you are concerned about your relationship, and you would both like to work with a therapist, we recommend couples therapy. After this work, if one or both of you would like to continue in individual sessions, you may choose to see the same therapist or see different therapists for your individual counseling. It is not recommended to move from individual into couple’s work with the same therapist because of potential trust issues.
